WHAT: Keeping watch and slaughtering heartless defending the entrance to the palace.

[How Kanda found himself perched on a rooftop with none other than that girl from before was beyond him. It was night, the town was chillingly silent and he was meditating. Hordes of heartless had slowed down, or at least they must have decided that they were really not going to be able to pass that door the two were guarding.

Sometime around the late night or early morning, Kanda had lost track of time by then, he turned to the girl he was sharing a roof with. She was still in one piece. Not exactly impressive but he had to cut her some slack. For now.]

You should sleep. I'll keep watch. Things have slowed down so I don't think we'll have a problem.

[A part of her wants to insist she's fine, they should both watch - but he's right. If they both rest together, there'll be no one when they exhaust themselves and are asleep.

She's learning to be less sensitive about the wolf form. Changing back and forth takes energy, energy she needs to use for strength when the occasional braver heartless comes towards them.]

I'll sleep in just a little while. There are some bands of heartless still roaming.

They must be getting impatient. [He chuckles.]

About time. It's been boring sitting up here all night.

Mm. But I want to know more about it before we fight. If these heartless coming now are a new type, they'll have different ways of fighting.

What do you expect us to do, wait and follow them to see what they can do? They're not exactly something we can spy on at them moment.

[By now, she's learned to control the transformation simply by her will, and not by accident or a trigger phrase. Her shape melds into that of the wolf with keen blue eyes.]

You're not doing me any favors if you're hesitating because you're doubting yourself. If you're not comfortable doing what your doing then let me make the first move.

How are you doing with that form of yours? It's not your usual ability is it?

[After Ciel, she's more careful about these possible verbal traps, and doesn't allude to her other abilities herself.]

I've never experienced anything like it. It's difficult. And, when I'm in that form, I feel as though I've truly become a beast. [She doesn't particularly like it.]

Are you referring to your image or to the slaughtering you seem to do very well in that form?

It's too violent, isn't it? It doesn't suit me. [And she means this. She gives a little shudder when she thinks about it too much.]

We all have an inner beast. Whether you have shown it in the past or not doesn't mean anything. It's bound to unleash somehow.

You don't like it? How do you think our race survived so many years? It's not good and it's not bad. It just is.

Humans should be about more than survival. Don't you think so, too?

What are you getting at? Everything sums up to just that: survival.

That's not true. We never praise a human civilization for surviving. We praise their accomplishments: government, architecture, art, culture, language... and so on.

[decaying]

[The exorcist sighed, turning his head back towards the streets below.]

That's not what I was getting at.

[And normally it wasn't in Kanda's nature to really get in-depth with these sort of talks. Truth be told, there weren't a lot of these talks. Maybe with Lavi but Lavi always did most of the talking. Kanda just didn't care about the world. He looked down, eyes closed in thought trying to remember something or other to avoid the topic at hand.]

Everyone is in a constant competition, aren't they? Those that live make their own rules and their own order. Once they're gone or replaced, someone else makes their own thing. You keep remembering what the people before kept making but it all adds up to their lack of survival. You throw away the old and replace with a stronger new. It makes no difference whether praise something that won't exist very long.

[Perhaps too many double-meanings there. The girl wouldn't know, of course. His annoyed expression resumed.]

Survival alone isn't what matters most. [She should know. She's given up her life more than once for those more important things.]

It's how we live the life we have, and what we live it for and protect.

Why am I bothering with this anyway. There's no wrong in killing for a good reason. That's it.

I also don't consider the battles I've fought to be wrong. There is a time when it's necessary.
